Reading
The Schoharie Elementary School has recently
adopted the Harcourt Trophies Reading Series (K-6). Harcourt
Trophies is a scientifically-based reading program which addresses
the five basic components of reading instruction.
• Phonemic awareness
• Phonics
• Fluency
• Vocabulary
• Comprehension
Mathematics
The basis of the mathematics instruction in
Kindergarten through Grade 5 is the Saxon Math program. The Prentice
Hall math series provides the basis of instruction for grades 6, 7, and
8.
Science
The elementary science program is a hands-on science
program which affords the students the opportunity to explore scientific
concepts while learning scientific content.
Social Studies
The elementary social studies curriculum focuses on
the five standards of social studies instruction: US history, world
history, geography, economics and civics, citizenship and government.
Fine Arts
Instruction in the arts is an integral part of our
student’s day. In addition to art and musical experiences in the
classroom, students receive instruction in the basic tenets of art and
music. Choir programs for grades 3 through 6 and a band program for
grades 5 and 6 offer opportunities for students to enrich their musical
experiences.
Physical Education
Schoharie Elementary offers a comprehensive physical
education which encourages physical development, healthy lifestyles and
sportsmanship. Students are actively involved in instruction in physical
fitness, exercise, nutrition, individual and team sports.

Progress Reporting
Kindergarten – Grade 4
Student progress is reported to parents through parent conferences and a
combination of interim and progress reports. The progress reports
provide parents with feedback on their child’s academic, social and
physical growth and development.
Progress reports for students in kindergarten
through grade 4 are distributed three times per year: December, March
and June. The timing of these reports (every 60 instructional days)
coincide with the units of instruction and assessments of the Harcourt
Trophies Reading Series.
In addition to the report provided by the homeroom
teacher, parents receive reports on their child’s progress in the fine
arts and physical education curricula areas.
Grades 5 and 6
Student progress is reported in five week intervals, using a
combination of interim and progress reports. Progress reports are
distributed on a quarterly basis in November, January, April and June.
A numerical grading system based upon percentages is
used to report academic progress.
Criteria for Honor Roll, based upon cumulative
average, is as follows:
• Honorable Mention: 85%-89%
• Honors: 90%-94%
• High Honor: 95%-100%
Parent Conferences
Schoharie Elementary School has two scheduled (fall,
spring) parent conference days. Parents are encouraged to contact
teachers with any concerns they may have and parent/teacher conferences
may be scheduled at any mutually convenient time.
