All Sports Booster Club donates $9,000 to SCS Athletics

School sports and athletics provide benefits beyond physical fitness. Students build self-confidence and school pride, learn teamwork, develop problem-solving skills, learn positive personal habits, and form friendships with their peers. And they have fun, too. Their families and the larger community benefit as well.

On July 12, All Sports Booster Club President Ann Bevins and Past President and Coordinator of Fund Raising Barb Sharpe presented a generous, $9,000 donation to the Schoharie Central School Board of Education to enable the district to continue offering several Junior Varsity (JV) sports and Varsity cheerleading, activities that had to be cut from the school budget. The JV sports include girls volleyball, girls and boys soccer, girls and boys basketball, girls softball and boys baseball.

In the past, the Booster Club has raised money for uniforms, banners, transportation and other sports-related needs. This year, the club is looking to raise approximately $26,000 for funding all three seasons of athletics at the JV level. The money will be used for transportation costs, officiating fees, entry fees for tournaments and coaching stipends. According to Sharpe, the Club is looking beyond that.

“We are raising money to cover things that can’t be funded by the school budget,” Sharpe noted. “Sports are important, but academics come first, so we are glad to be able to work for our teams.”

The community’s response to Booster Club activities has been overwhelmingly positive, with many contributing beyond what’s asked of them, according to Sharpe. “Not only have people, businesses and organizations made monetary donations on their own, even by creating their own fund-raisers, but they are also volunteering their time and participation.”

Booster Club fund-raisers have included a car wash, golf tournament and basketball and volleyball mini-camps. Since July 3, the Club has raised more than $800 through “You’ve Been Flocked.” A pink plastic flamingo is placed on a lawn, with a sign explaining why, until $5 is donated for it to be removed, or until $10 is donated for choosing where it will next migrate. Money also has been raised through a chicken barbecue, Booster Club benefit night at Jay Lacey’s Salon, concert donations from the Schoharie Promotional Association, and even a 60th birthday party for people born in May.

The All Sports Booster Club’s mission is “to support the athletes and coaches of Schoharie Sports, involve parents, coaches and athletes in Club activities in order to promote school spirit, and provide funding to supplement the needs of the athlete.”

Schoharie Director of Athletics and Assistant Principal Jamie Rockhill said, “The SCS All Sports Booster Club has helped with so many things over the years, but what they are doing now is really incredible. The way the club has brought the community together and worked so hard to fund JV sports, so that these SCS student-athletes will have the opportunity to compete, is AWESOME! On behalf of the more than 100 student-athletes this affects, I would like to say thank you.”
