New grade-level health requirements take effect July 1, 2018

New York state has set new grade-level requirements for health exams and screenings for students in pre-kindergarten through 12th grade.

Beginning July 1, all students enrolling in the district for the first time – along with children entering pre-kindergarten, kindergarten and grades 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, and 11 in the fall – will be required to have a health exam.

Other changes for students include vision screening for distance and near-vision acuity, as well as hearing screening within six months of admission to school and for students in pre-kindergarten, kindergarten, and grades 1, 3, 5, 7 and 11.

In addition, scoliosis screenings will be required for girls in grades 5 and 7, and boys in grade 9.

Also, please note that to be allowed to start school, students entering grades 7, 8, 9 and 12 must be vaccinated against meningococcal disease. Grades 7, 8 and 9 must have one dose of meningococcal vaccine. Grade 12 must to have two doses of meningococcal vaccine, with the last dose on or after 16 years of age or one dose of meningococcal vaccine on or after 16 years of age.

To ensure all children meet the healthcare requirements before the start of the 2018-19 school year, parents and guardians are advised to:

Schedule medical appointments ahead of time.

Review their children’s immunization records with their healthcare provider to ensure they have the required vaccinations for their age and grade in school.
