Home-School Connection – September 2018

Welcome back!

Message from the Principal:

The 2018-2019 school year is upon us! We are ready to welcome your children back with a Responsive Classroom approach that focuses on classroom community building, developmentally appropriate responses, and productive learning environments. Positive Behavior Intervention and Supports (PBIS) will hold a Wellness Day on September 7th. Students will be reminded of our positive school expectations, learn yoga, stress-reduction, proper nutrition, and have fun. This is a great way for the students and staff to come together this fall.

We are working on improved communications and safety this year. Please remember to bring your driver’s license every time you visit the school. The elementary got a new phone system and also a safety alarm system as part of the Capital Project this summer. The website has been updated and will continue to provide valuable communications in it for you to review, including the Student-Parent-Teacher Handbook.

At the beginning of each month, we send you this Home-School Connection, which will also be on this website. Soon we will be using School Messenger, which is an auto-calling system to report your child’s absence, food account balances, and important information from the main office. Finally, for photos of all of the hard work and play your children do, please join us on Twitter @SchoharieElem1.

I value you as our students’ first and most important teacher. Please reach out with any concerns or successes you’d like to share with me at any time. I can be reached at (518) 295-6651, and will respond quickly to emails at: apolikoski@schoharie.k12.ny.us.

Sincerely,
Andrea Polikoski

Attendance Makes a Difference

Your child’s teachers will do their best to help your child learn and succeed in school. But there’s one thing only you can do – get him or her to school every day.

Children who don’t attend school regularly fall behind. They can have a hard time making and keeping friends – especially in elementary school.

Show your child and his/her teachers that you know attendance counts:
– Tell your child how important school is.
– Make dental and other appointments during non-school hours.
– Don’t let your child skip school for reasons that wouldn’t prevent you from going to work.
– Avoid taking your child out of school on exam days.
– Keep track of your child’s absences. See if there are any patterns that need to be changed.
– Communicate with us if your child is expressing a worry about being in school so we can help address it.
