Home-School Connection – October 2018

Attendance – Important Reminder

In the event your child is absent from school, please send in a written note on the day he/she returns to school to excuse him/her, as required by NYS law. Please include in the note the date of absence and the reason for the absence. It is school policy that if an excuse is not received within three days of the absence, it will be recorded as an unexcused absence.

PBIS

During PBIS Wellness Day of September 7, 2018, students and staff worked together to provide Schoharie Elementary students opportunities to learn new skills for school and life where they focused on the four B’s: Be Respectful, Be Responsible, Be Safe, Be a Community.

The students listened to Zero, a story about a character who feels empty inside until the other numbers help her see how she counts. Then they discussed negative statements they’ve heard people say and took time to write positive statements about themselves that are displayed on our “I Am…” wall.

During a school-wide assembly, the PBIS Committee members kicked off the day with a short skit intended to teach and review the school wide  expectations of our school environment. From there, students had opportunities to practice new relaxation skills, and learn about the expected behavior in various school settings including on the bus. Students learned what appropriate behavior looks like in these areas.

Teachers incorporated stations into their responsive classroom morning meetings and  participated in grade level presentations and activities. Many posters and “links” are displayed throughout our building that show our students understanding of these concepts.

A Special PBIS THANK YOU to Presenters from the Community:

  • Mrs. Davis shared with students important nutrition information.
  • Maria Lemme led students and staff through yoga techniques that help reduce stress.
  • Schoharie County Mental Health came into classes to discuss different strategies for dealing with emotions.

As a research-based, overall approach rather than a set curriculum, PBIS involves the active participation of all school staff, students and their families.  At Schoharie Elementary, it can be fun, too!

We are looking forward to the many classroom, grade level, school-wide and community outreach activities we have planned this year!

Schoharie Celebrations

This month, students will join together on October 30th for our first of many monthly Schoharie Celebrations. As an extension of PBIS and Responsive Classroom approaches, we will come together as a school community to engage in a skit around school expectations, share learning at each grade level, honor birthdays, and develop our culture through song. If your child has a special part, you will receive a personalized invitation to this celebration.
