In honor of the UN International Day of Peace on Monday, September 21 (also known as World Peace Day), the HS Student Government set up a flag walk from the HS Library to the HS Lobby. Nearly 200 flags were posted from all the nations of the world with messages of peace. The walk leads to the Peace Pole on the outside lawn in front of the HS Office that the Student Government planted last spring.
Students who participated in the project said it was fun to see all of the different flags from around the world, including those from countries they had never heard of before.
One of the learning moments from the project, according to student Maddy Bruno, was realizing that a lot of the countries whose flags they were placing on the walls were in a state of war.
“All of the countries deserve peace,” Maddy said.
The library end of the display features a case with some selected books to learn more about efforts to promote piece worldwide. The students laminated each of the flags and are hoping they will be on display for much of the school year, and be reinstalled again next year on World Peace Day.
